Geocache Description:

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius)

Male pictured.  Female has white throat.    Photo courtesy Lloyd Spitalnik

Length about 7-3/4”
Uncommon, but sighted in the Northern Kettle Moraine in Spring and Fall.

Look at the specialized beak, toes, and tail.  Sapsuckers drill parallel rows of small holes in live trees.  They return to the holes to feed on sap and insects.  Other woodpeckers target mostly dead or dying trees.  Flight is undulating.

This cache is located along a bridle/snowmobile trail and is also close to the Ice Age Trail in the Northern Kettle Moraine (NKM) State Forest.  Enjoy a hike in the beautiful, hilly forest while watching and listening for woodpeckers.  A map showing the trails in the NKM is available from the WI DNR here: DNR Trail Map

This is 1 in a series of 8 nearby caches honoring Woodpeckers of the NKM.  (Bookmark at right)  This cache contains a clue needed to find the 8th cache: Why Don’t Woodpeckers Have Brain Damage?

The trail is used year-round but at times snowshoes or skis might be helpful.  Best roadside parking on CR S.
