10 Years
of Geocaching
Picnic
Terra Cotta, Ontario
It all started on May 1st,
2000 when President Clinton announced that the scrambling of the
satellite navigation system, known as Selective Availability (SA),
would be turned off. Everyone would now be able to enjoy greater
accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS) which would allow
geocaching to become what it is today. The first stash was hidden
by Dave Ulmer just outside of Portland, Oregon on May 3rd, 2000 and
was found the next day. On May 30th, 2000 Matt Stum suggested the
name geocaching which our great activity has been known by ever
since.
Now 10 years later,
geocachers from Ontario and around the world are getting together
to celebrate 10 Years of Geocaching. There will be hundreds of
events held around the world on May 1st/2nd 2010 to bring cachers
together for this milestone in Geocaching.
