Google Maps Street View - Moncton Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Tiger Tracker: This cache has gone missing a number of times so as a result, I am archiving it. In addition, the Streetview images have changed since I first created the cache so it is no longer current. Thanks to all who found it.

Geocache Description:

Moncton was added to the Google Maps Street View database in line with the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

At the same time, a new cache was published in Montréal (GC23TZ8) which gave me the idea to create this one.

This is my 50th cache so it is only fitting that it be special.

A special thank you to OusKonNé & Cétyla of Québec for the help with the coding of the cache page.

Google Maps Street View - Moncton

This mystery cache gives you the opportunity to virtually move through the streets of Moncton using Google Maps Street View, this powerful tool available for Moncton since February 2010.

Navigation through Google Maps Street View

With Google Maps Street View, you can move along the streets in two ways:
1. Using your mouse (by clicking on the virtual arrows on the screen);
2. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard.

The orientation (North, South, East, West) is done by using the compass shown on the left. For example, to align the image to the North, simply drag the "N" up to the top of the compass (North). The same result can also be obtained by dragging the mouse on the picture.

Finally, the easiest way to make a "Zoom in" or "Zoom out" is to click the + or - available below the compass (see picture shown on the left). The "Zoom in" will be useful to clearly read some answers.

Quest of the virtual clues

Every step virtually teleports you to a well known place in Moncton, a place from where you will start and try to find a hint by following these instructions.

Answer

A

Law Courts

The Moncton law courts are currently located in the Assumption building. A new law court complex is being built at an estimated capital cost of the project is $50 million. The facility will be about 11,970 square metres (133,000 square feet) in area, and will have 15 courtrooms, two hearing rooms, holding cells and chambers for the judiciary. It will also have offices for court services administration personnel, public prosecutions, the Barristers Society, sheriff personnel, Public Safety officials, police and justice officials. Completion is scheduled to be completed in fall of 2010.

B

Tidal Bore

A tidal bore (bore = crest or wave) is a natural phenomenon which is seen in a very few parts of the world.

The Bay of Fundy is particularly noted for its extremely high tides, the highest in the world, and for its tidal bores. Twice in 24 hours, the Petitcodiac River empties and fills. The higher waters in the Bay cause the water in the placid Petitcodiac River to roll back upstream in one wave, which can range in height from 3 to 60 cm.

Make sure you watch the dramatic change of the river itself! At low tide the muddy river bottom is often visible, but within an hour of the arrival of the Bore, the water level rises some 7.5 meters (25 ft) to fill the river to its banks!

The size of the tidal bore began to decrease from its once massive waves, after a one-kilometer-long causeway was built in 1968. The Tidal Bore can be seen from many points in the Greater Moncton area, one of the best being Tidal Bore Park, where a clock displays the time of the next bore.

C

Capital Theatre

In 1991, the Capitol Theatre, together with the smaller, adjoining Empress Theatre, was purchased by the City of Moncton and assigned a Board of Directors. The Theatre had been converted many years before into a movie cinema, but Monctonians now wished to restore the building to its original look of 1922. Restoration of this stately piece of Moncton heritage began in February 1992. The Capitol Theatre opened its doors to the public in the fall of 1993, making it one of only eight such theatres in Canada.

D

Magnetic Hill

Magnetic Hill has been a top attraction in New Brunswick for over 100 years. Originally part of a provincial highway, Magnetic Hill was eventually sold to the City of Moncton and preserved as a tourist attraction while a bypass highway was built around it. Magnetic Hill Park won a Top Attraction award with Attractions Canada. See for yourself - put your vehicle in neutral and let it roll uphill without power! Magnetic or magic? We challenge you to figure out the mystery.

NB Tel Tower

The Bell Aliant Tower, formerly known as the Aliant Tower and older still, the NBTel Tower, is a 127 metre high tower. It is used to provide directional radio services. It is the tallest radio tower in Atlantic Canada. The tower was made necessary when the construction of Assomption Place blocked the signal of the original 135 feet tower.

F

Moncton Wildcats

The Moncton Wildcats play in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League. The franchise was formed in 1995 at the Moncton Alpines but had a very difficult year. In 1996, the team was purchased by Robert Irving and renames the Moncton Wildcats. The highlight of the team was in 2005 when they won the President’s Cup and hosted the Memorial Cup Tournament. They reached the Memorial Cup final only to lose 6-2 to the Québec Ramparts.
