Geocache Description:

Look at this area, it was once the home to over 800 Midwest City families. There is a sad history to this area. On April 27, 1958, an F-89 aircraft crashed upon a landing attempt. The pilot was killed. The aircraft canopy hit and damaged a house on Red Bud Dr in Midwest City. Then again on August 25, 1961, an F-100 jet fighter crashed in the Glenwood Addition, 200 block of Ferguson St. Two children were killed and several houses destroyed by fire. On November 22, 1961, a C-131 crashed onto the Tinker diagonal highway under construction. The plane was destroyed. Three people suffered serious injury. September 12, 1962, a B-57 crashed in a field northeast of Reno and Douglas Blvd after departure from Tinker AFB. The two aircrew members were killed. January 18, 1963, a T-33 jet trainer crashed south of Tinker AFB near Elm Creek Reservoir (Draper Lake). Both crew members were killed. On December 18, 1968, an F-4C Phantom jet swept over a portion of Midwest City dragging a webbing which knocked out power lines, snapped tree tops, and damaged houses and cars for two blocks. October 7, 1969, a Kansas Air National Guard F-100 aircraft crashed in the Glenwood Addition, 700 blk of Bowman Dr. The co-pilot was killed, three houses destroyed, and two damaged. Then later on May 2, 1974, a T-38 jet trainer crashed in Midwest City one and one-half miles from the Tinker north-south runway. The two pilots were killed. One house was destroyed. The pilots stayed with the plan to miss the Glenwood Addition to avoid the school. The school district had worked with Tinker to fund the painting of the school name on the roof to identify it from the air just before the crash happened.
In 1973, Tinker Air Force Base began to purchase and clear approximately 836 single-family homes, 32 vacant lots and Glenwood Elementary School from the Glenwood Addition, which was located on the north side of SE 29th Street north of Tinker’s main runway and east of Midwest Boulevard.
