10 Years of Geocaching Multi-Event: New York
- On May 1, 2000 an announcement was made that Selective
Availability would be lifted.
- On May 2, 2000 Selective Availability lifted and the accuracy
of GPS technology was greatly improved.
- On May 3, 2000 Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket with items inside
including videos, books, software, and a slingshot as well as a
logbook and pencil. He called it the First GPS Stash. He shared the
waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on
sci.geo.satellite-nav: N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800
- Within three days two different people read about his stash on
the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container
and shared their experiences online. The sport of geocaching was
born!

To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of geocaching.
This event is part of a global multi-event occurring on the same
day all around the world.

Morning: Get
into the spirit, and participate in the
Ellis Hollow CITO event, hosted by
Ithacadoodle!
Mid-Morning:
Mess around Ithaca picking up some of our great local
caches!
1:00-3:30 Come to
the event!
Bring your picnic
or brown-bag lunch
Lemonade and, (you guessed it), beans will be provided.
Hang out
Eat lunch
Meet & greet
Trade travelers at the trackable table
Pick up the official 10-Years Event Coin
Adopt a Cache! (Bubbaduck will be moving away, and gramp larry will
be at the event with a sign up sheet for adopting their local
caches)
3:00 Group Photo & Door Prizes
3:30 Event ends
Afternoon: Head
out with some friends from the event on the Black Diamond Trail
(new caches planned in coordination with the event).
