Coqui572: It is with much sadness that I archive this listing. When published five years ago it was an achievement, having the only Wherigo cache available for all the geocachers in Puerto Rico. With the popularity of phone geocaching, these type of hides are becoming more rare since many people lack the required software to solve the problems. At the same time, I have no way of checking whether or not this geocache is still there or give it any maintenance.

To all of those that came to visit, thank you for being a part of this project. It took countless hours of programming to create the cartridge and tweak it around in order to have it actually work on the field. I hope that it brought you a little closer to the history of my hometown, and that you took away the happy memories along with a unique little icon for your "find" history.

I shall see you all in the trails someday.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the "Panteon Nacional Roman Baldorioty de Castro". The purpose of this Wherigo cartridge is to take you on a small tour through the second oldest cemetery in Puerto Rico.

Built in 1843 for the exclusive use of Catholics, it was abandoned in 1918. During this period a lot of the structures in the cemetery suffered damage, including desecration of several tombs to rob the jewelry off the wealthier class that was interred in the middle of the cemetery.

In 1991 the Municipality of Ponce renovated the cemetery and renamed it "Panteón Nacional Roman Baldorioty de Castro". Since this date, it has been the final resting place of several public figures, like a former Governor and a former Mayor of the City. No public burials are performed in the cemetery anymore, and only the administration of the city has the authority to provide a lot on the cemetery for a person with a historical tie to the city.

Now on to the cartridge. The posted coordinates will take you to the entrance of the cemetery. Your GPSr Cartridge will start at this coordinates.

As with all Wherigo cartridges constantly SAVE your game!
Please note the operating times/rules of the monument:
- Tuesday through Sunday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (Closed on Mondays)
- If Monday is a holiday it will open on the times above (however the site will be closed on the Tuesday following the holiday)
- This is a cemetery after all, be respectful
- Entrance is free of charge
- There is plenty of parking spots around the place
- Log your visit
- Tour guides are available (and will be helpful when completing the cartridge)

You will NOT find the final hiding location in the cemetery. However, the container is at walking distance from the monument.

The necessary Wherigo cartridge will not come with a download of this cache - you must visit the Wherigo page to download it.

The cartridge is designed such that you cannot complete the game from emulator play. The game is designed where you must input info into a text box or answer a multiple choice question in order to see the next screen or "zone". If you aren't actually at that place, you won't have that information. Good mapping and research might allow you to discover the necessary information from home.

If you don't have a device that will play a Wherigo cartridge, here are a couple of options. 1) Play on the emulator as far as you can - generate some coords for the spot (mapping is your friend) go get the info (or perhaps research for it), then go home and continue the game; or from the location, call a friend at a PC with the emulator and cartridge with the info to continue the game - you'll get the next screen.

Some notes on how this Wherigo Geocache cartridge works. The cartridge has various zones plus the final location (akin to various stages in a multi-cache). The first zone, Entry Zone, will be active and visible from anywhere. The next zone will become visible and active when you're in the Entry Zone. "Active" means that your device is calculating a bearing and distance from your current location; "visible" means it shows on your map screen. You'll see it on your locations screen when it is active. If you select it, it will show like a waypoint "go to" - with distance and direction arrow. Once you arrive in a zone, there may be a question to answer before the next zone becomes active and visible. Again, you have to select it from the locations screen to become your next "go to". Zones become inactive as you exit them, to save CPU power; too many "active" zones slows the Pocket PC or Garmin as they calculate distances and bearings to each active location. The geocache location becomes active and visible only after you've correctly entered some data. Coordinates are provided for the geocache. Zones are approx 30' by 30' in this cartridge and are this large to allow for error due to tree cover. Specific information is given for each zone to allow you to complete any question. Once you've entered the cache zone (and completed the Wherigo game) you will need to exit Wherigo and use your GPS, having loaded it with the coordinates provided. The back button will not scroll you back through screens! It takes you back to the main screen, a listing of available locations, tasks etc. If you want to retain data (coords) you should write it down.
