A fun micro (well, I think it's fun) hidden near the site of a former gas station.

This spot was a series of gas stations dating back to 1947. In the pre-Interstate days, this was the main highway from Phoenix to Tucson. Coolidge had lots of gas stations, most of which died off after I-10 opened. The tanks here were removed from the ground about 15 years ago. They had huge rust holes through them which is fairly typical of old tanks. Many thousands of gallons of gas had seeped out. There are many contaminated gas station sites in Coolidge, and all over Arizona, not all of which are being cleaned up.

The funky machine behind the fence is a SVE- Soil Vapor Extraction unit. There is still gasoline in the ground as deep as 80 feet. There are about 20 wells on the property going down to the water table. This machine pumps air into the ground and then sucks out the gasoline vapors that rise.

Texaco is spending a few million dollars on this. They are almost 15 years into it and not anywhere near being done. An environmental company samples the water and the soil every few months and it is improving, but it's a long process.

There is a strain of bacteria that they can inject into the ground. These bacteria will actually eat the gasoline and the gas they uh, "toot" out is methane. This machine will filter out the methane.

While it's in limbo waiting to be cleaned up, we might as well have fun geocaching.
