Important Note!
The Commonwealth of Virginia is divided into 95 counties and and 38 independent cities.
Under Virginia law, all municipalities incorporated as cities are independent cities and are not part of any county. Therefore, only cache finds within the city limits of an independent city are required to count as an independent city find.
Because of this distinction, please see our cache Virginia County Challenge, that will let you earn a separate smiley for all those county finds.
Note that while the map above shows 40 independent cities, in 2001, Clifton Forge relinquished its city charter and reincorporated as a town in Alleghany County, and on July 1, 2013, Bedford is now a town in Bedford County, so now there are only 38.

The Rules
- Only caches that are listed on geocaching.com are valid caches
for this challenge.
- In order to count an independent city, you must find a cache within the city limits of that independent city.
Generally accepted rules, guidelines and conditions for logging a cache find apply. You must physically visit, locate, sign the log and/or log your find online for all the caches you claim for this challenge. You also need to meet all other requirements listed on the cache page, if there are any.
- No temporary caches or locationless will count. In the case of multi-stage or puzzle caches the listing coordinates provided on the cache page will be used to determine in which independent city the cache resides.
- Cache finds before and after the date of the creation of this challenge may be used.
Verification
To verify your list of independent cities logged, either post a bookmark
list or send me a GPX file (preferred) of the caches you'd like to count towards the challenge.
There is no need to specify the independent city, though if you want to, feel
free to do so. After we have verified that you have a find in each of the 39 independent cities, we will send you the coordinates and instructions to the final cache so you can complete the challenge.
If any of these requirements is a problem, contact us and we can work out another verification method.
