How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

It's Springtime! The thawing of caches allows you to rip around town in fast cars looking for new caches.

So here is Project RACECAR 2010 - The Regina Area Cache Explosion - Cache and Release Event.

The idea is simple : Place Great Caches, Find Great Caches, and then Party On and Get Prizes!

Encourage people to vote by sending them to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7BCSS3H to vote for their favorite RACECAR caches by putting this link at the top of your cache listings. Voting will continue until late July or Early August.

Please log this cache as "Will Attend" if you are planning on coming to the Windup Party so we can get an idea of numbers

Upcoming Deadlines

Important Dates

April 17 CACHE FINDING STARTS AT 00:01!
April 20 Since it is not fair to expect the organziers to buy all the prizes for the event, we ask that every geocaching name bring a prize that they would like to win. Please drop off your prize (attach a note with your geocaching name on it) by this date to one of the Additional Waypoints. People from out of town may write a note in their Will Attend and bring their prize with them to the windup. The more prizes that we get, the better the awards ceremony. People who do not bring a prize will not be eligible to win a prize, but are still very welcome to come, have fun, and log an "Attended".
April 24 CACHE FINDING ENDS at 18:00
  • Submit your log of all the caches you found, either with the Excel Spreadsheet (emailed to Geldhart),
  • Or you can print off and fill in the PDF on paper.
  • Paper entries can be dropped off at any of the "Additional Waypoints".
  • Make sure your entries are emailed or dropped off by 21:00 to be eligible for prizes based on the caches you found.
  • VOTE for your favorite caches online. The link will be released after all the caches are published.
April 25 At 17:30 we all converge at the Trillium's house for a massive wind up party, complete with food, prizes, coins, and fun. Bring a side dish or dessert, along with the beverages (adult or otherwise) that you wish to drink. Bring lawn chairs and your trackables. In your Will Attend log, please give us an idea of how many are coming to the party.

Find Caches

You can start searching for caches April 17 at 00:01 (aka 12:01 AM)

  • Log all your finds both on geocaching.com and on the RACECAR log sheet. You may either fill out the Excel version and email it to the Event Planner or print off a copy (or two or three) of the PDF and drop it off at one of the Additional Waypoints.

  • The RACECAR logs require that you fill in the time you found the cache. Use the 24hr clock (eg 19:42 for 7:42PM), and use the time on your GPSr. Also, make sure you also log all your DNFs, as there are prizes for caches that generate DNFs, along with a prize for the best DNF log.

  • To make Project RACECAR as family friendly, and worker friendly as possible we are planning for a weeks worth of caching. With over 50,000 square kilometers of Saskatchewan prairie to search, we will need it.

The official end to RACECAR cache finding is April 24th at 18:00.

If you wish to be considered for prizes at the Windup, please turn in your log sheet no later than April 24th at 21:00, either by email or dropping off your paper at one of the waypoints below.

When you are not caching, browse through the logs and consider which cachers and caches will deserve your votes. The ballots will be available later.

Logs after this date won't be used for RACECAR purposes

Hide Caches

The first step in any Cache and Release event is to release new, permanent caches, into the area for everyone to find. Even after the event is over and forgotten, it's legacy will be in the new and creative caches left behind.

The deadline for submitting RACECAR2010 caches has now passed. The caches will be published on April 16th, and finding will begin on April 17th.

As a reminder the following types of hides are not permitted as RACECAR2010 caches

  • RACECAR does not allow caches in Lamp Post Skirts
  • Other than the CITO event, no other events can be official RACECAR caches.
  • Evergreen trees with Micros and Nanos cannot be used for RACECAR. Small, Regular and Large caches may use evergreen trees. If you use a bison tube to hold the logbook, and that bison tube is attached to, or inside of, a larger container, base your size judgement on the larger container.
  • All other rules for placing caches apply, including getting permission from land owners when necessary.

Scoring Points

  • Cache owners will score their own caches on the honour system and submit their entries to the event hosts no later than April 13th. See Important dates for the entry forms.
  • Be unique, if only a single cache uses one of the elements on the list, that is worth a prize right there.
  • Telling how your cache scored its points in your cache listing is completely optional. We understand that the element of surprise can make for great caches.

Get Prizes

Since it is not fair to expect the event organizers to purchase all the prizes for the windup, we are asking everyone to bring a prize for the windup (1 per geocaching name).

  • Your prize should be the kind of item that you would like to win

  • Drop off your prize (with your geocaching name attached) at one of the waypoints below by April 20.

  • If you are coming from out of town, you may leave a note in your Will Attend log, and bring your prize with you to the windup.

  • If you cannot, or do not, bring a prize you are still very welcome to come to the event (and log it as "Attended") but will not be eligible to win a prize.

  • The more prizes we have, the better the awards ceremony

Initial Prize List

This is not a full list, but consider it a tasty treat of what is to come. Some prizes will be secret, and not announced until the Windup. Prizes in Red will have an award for the Overall winner, and another prize for the top Rookie (5 or fewer hides, or 30 or fewer finds).
