Two Degrees West – Holes Bay Cycleway Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

FrenziedFrog: Once again it appears that someone has a grudge against our hobby (thanks, Tracey_Justice, for the report). I suspect that if I replace the container again, the same thing will happen. So, reluctantly, I'll close this one down. Sorry!

Geocache Description:

A traditional cache right by Poole’s Holes Bay Cycleway that fits into the "Two Degrees West" series, started by The Chens and slowly growing across the country.

Having visited the most southerly geocache in this set, and realising that the line passes through my home town, I decided it was time to add to the series.

The Holes Bay cycleway is a route between central Poole and the lovely Upton Country Park that winds its way round the edge of Holes Bay. It provides a lovely route for a walk / jog / cycle and is well used by locals. The route from Poole is paved up to the Country Park boundary, and is then a gravel path through the woods towards Upton House This cache is approximately 100m. inside the Park boundary; it is located just off the path. Take care when retrieving – there could be frequent jogger and cycle muggles. The Park is officially closed at night.

Car-based cache and dashers: this one isn’t for you! The nearest safe parking is at the Country Park centre, about 1km away, but go on, try the walk – it’s lovely (and the friendly staff in the Peacock tearoom serve wonderful cakes!). Alternatively, if you approach the site from the Poole direction, you may well see the "iconic" (I hate that word) Twin Sails Bridge in operation.

The line of longitude, 2°W, is the only line of longitude that coincides exactly with one of the lines of the Ordnance Survey National Grid. It's line 400000 of the National Grid, also known as the Central Meridian, for those who like to know these things. It also runs the entire length of England: from just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed on the north-east coast to a couple of miles south-west of Swanage on the south coast - a total of 359 miles.
The author and television presenter, Nicholas Crane, whom you may have seen on BBC's 'Coast', once walked the whole line from north to south. He allowed himself a margin of just one grid square either side of the line. After the walk he wrote a very readable book called "Two Degrees West" which describes his escapades. The book is now out of print, but still available from second hand dealers.
