Geocache Description:

The clue is in a magnetic key safe with coordinates of the geocache which is a 1 litre plastic container filled with the usual goodies

The cache name refers to leggers who were itinerant labourers who powered canal boats through tunnels that did not have towing paths through them. In the past most canal boats were horse drawn. At such places as Shortwood Tunnel Leggers would hire themselves out, they would propel canal boats through the tunnel whilst the horse would be led to the other side by the boatman. A plank of wood was placed across the bows of the boat and 2 men would edge out on the plank with their feet outwards until they were in contact with the tunnel wall. They would them walk along the wall until they were through the tunnel.

The Birmingham Worcester Canal is 30 miles long and was opened throughout in 1815 and was known as the 58 this was due to the number of locks to take it from the River Severn onto the midland plateau.
Shortwood Tunnel is 613 yards long and a footpath over the hill connects the towpaths.

Shortly after placing the cache I was surpised to see a canal boat emerge from Shortwood Tunnel - some people will go out in snow and ice in February - they must be mad!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Delta 68 F.T.F.
