Tarkiln Pitcher Plant and Pine Cache, West Pensacola
Tarkiln Bayou Preserve is the home to not just one but four species of endangered pitcher plants. The State so serious about this endangered species kept Wal Mart from developing in one spot that was just too close to the plants. The park is also home to other unique plant species. The rare, carnivorous white-top pitcher plant is found only between the Apalachicola and Mississippi rivers. There are almost 100 other rare plants and animals that live in the wet prairie habitat, including the alligator snapping turtle, sweet pitcher plant, and Chapman's butterwort. If you decide to venture on the boardwalk to view the wild and beautiful Tarkiln Bayou you will find that this is no ordinary state park. The entrance will be decieving and why lies just a few steps away are the beautiful rare plants that are protected so they will continue to thrive.
The name Tarkiln comes from the “Tar Kilns” used during pine pitch or sap collection. The area was important to the Naval stores industry.
This border area between Florida and Alabama area is filled with pines that hold the record length of needle in North America. Some measure more than 12 inches long.
