Geocache Description:

This is a 3 mile round trip hike to a spectacular area that was once the summer home of the Calhouns. You will want to spend an hour or more exploring the area.

This cache is not hidden in any of the historical areas so please follow the coordinates, the cache is right near the logging road. Watch for possible snakes guarding the cache as you reach for it. The hint will give you an easy find.

This is an area rich in history. This area is the Keowee Heights Plantation area of the Clemson Forest. Nearby of this Cache is the spring house, the plantation house site, and the cemetery.

Park at Doyle Bottom Road and hike the 1.5 miles down the road. For the most park you will take the left fork each time presented with one (not the first one though). As you walk, look into the woods and notice the terraces that were created to create farm land out the hilly area. You may spot various wildlife also.

After you find the cache be sure to take the time to visit the nearby spring house which was the refrigerator for the Mansion. Also visit the nearby Calhoun Cemetery which is centuries old.

The jewel of this area is the Mansion Site. It sits atop a hill with a sweeping view of Clemson, CU, the Lake (remember this was once the confluence of the Keowee and Seneca Rivers. What a spectacular place to spend the summer!

Please take care to tread lightly, pack out more trash than you pack in, and do not tamper with the delicate historical features. That way this will be around for centuries more.
