Geocache Description:

This is part of a global event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching!

.
It all started on May 1st, 2000 when President Clinton announced that the scrambling of the satellite navigation system, known as Selective Availability (SA), would be turned off.

On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade.

On May 3rd Dave Ulmer placed his own container, a black bucket, in the woods near Beaver Creek, Oregon, near Portland. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, and a slingshot. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav: N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800. The location of the original GPS stash now features a tribute plaque.

On May 30th, 2000 Matt Stum suggested the name geocaching which our great activity as been known by ever since.

Groundspeak has a page with more information about the history of geocaching.

.
1st CACHE IN MARATHON AREA:

The first geocache in the Marathon area was “Hawk’s Ridge” (GC88E3) hidden by Don & Barb Gainer on September 2, 2002. Unfortunately this cache was archived on April 24, 2008. With this first cache in Marathon, the number of caches in the area has slowly grown to almost 150 caches within a radius of 80 kilometres from the site of the first geocache in Marathon.

If there is enough time, we will include a hike to the original location of this first cache (GC88E3) (N48° 41.161, W086° 21.828)

.
PENN LAKE PARK ACTIVITIES:

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching and the first cache established in the Marathon area, we are planning an afternoon of geocaching activities in Penn Lake Park.

A series of 10 caches (10 Years! – “………..” on the PLPHT) have been created for the event. These caches will be released on April 30, 2010.

Please do not search for these caches until the day of the event – May 2, 2010 – 12:45 PM.

There will be a wrap-up B-B-Q at the end of the activities.

.
