Meet the only natrocarbonatite lava volcano in the world.
"Ol Doinyo Lengai" means "Mountain of God" in the language of the
native Maasai people.
Ol Doinyo Lengai is a volcano located in the north of Tanzania in
the eastern Rift Valley, south of Lake Natron.
It is unique among active volcanoes in that it produces
natrocarbonatite lava, a unique occurrence of volcanic carbonatite.
The lava of Ol Doinyo Lengai is rich in the rare sodium and
potassium carbonates, nyerereite and gregoryite.
Further, the temperature of its lava as it emerges is only around
510 °C (950 °F).

The record of eruptions on the mountain dates to 1883. After the
1966 eruption it was found quite until 2008, where the former top
of the volcano crashed into a new crater.
I've also been there in 2003 and 2004 watching smaller
activities.
To log this cache, please answer the following questions and send
your results to the owner:
1. The spraying lava creates interesting hills on the top of the
volcano. How are they named?
2. What is the name of the MTSU-scientist, who cares very much on
Lengai research?
3. What value was measured (Richter Scale) at the strongest tremor
in 2008?
4. To verify that you were there, please send me an email with the
colours of the rocks near one of the following positions you can
see the Volcano from:
(please indicate, which of them you have been at)
