On 2/26/2010, the Town of Webster completed the purchase of 74.7
acres land from Xerox. Of that, 53 acres is devoted to the town
Open Space program. See property
map here. For information on the purchase, go here. The
property also includes 21.7 acres with softball fields, tennis
courts, a basketball court, and a recreation building, which will
eventually become the new home of the Webster Parks and Recreation
Department, due to the closing of the current Ebner Drive facility.
When I saw that this land purchase was happening, I immediately
thought of placing a geocache there. What true geocacher wouldn't?
Then I decided I wanted to be the FTH (first to hide) a geocache
there (possibly a difficult feat with all the crazy cachers in
Webster). Well, today the purchase is final and my daughter and I
placed a cache there.
The cache is a decon container, hidden in a pretty standard way.
The area may be swampy in wet weather and Spring time. It was OK in
Winter, when we placed it, but we could see some water in the
bottoms of our footprints, so I suspect the area to be wet at
certain times of the year. Boots are highly recommended. We will
have to see how this property fares in the other times of the year
now that it is part of the Webster Open Space. There should be
enough room to hide several other caches here, if spaced out
properly. The cache contains a log and pencil only. No swag, though
there is a bit of room for small items, and a geocoin or two.
This is the first cache I have hidden with my new Garmin Oregon,
so I hope the coordinates are good. I wasn't too familiar with the
unit's waypoint averaging feature, so I will have to play with it.
I may go back and adjust later.
Have fun and happy caching!
Congratulations to ChileHead for FTF on my FTH - logged a
mere 43 minutes after the listing publication was sent out. Gotta
love the dedicated geocacher!
