Geocache Description:

Five Hundred FiftySixth in the Famous People (FP) Series - Don Henley
Donald Hugh "Don" Henley (born July 22, 1947; Gilmer, Texas) is a musician, singer, songwriter and drummer, best known as a founding member of the Eagles.

After graduating from Linden-Kildare High School in 1965, he joined Richard Bowden at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, and then a year later the pair transferred to North Texas State University in Denton. They were still playing in their band, which would go through several personnel and name changes over the next few years. When Jim Ed Norman and Richard’s cousin Mike Bowden joined the band, they changed the name from the Four Speeds to Felicity. It was this iteration that caught the attention of Kenny Rogers, who they met while shopping for bell-bottoms one afternoon in a McKinney Avenue boutique in Dallas. They asked Rogers, then a Top 40 recording artist with The First Edition, to come hear the band playing in a Dallas bar. According to Bowden, Rogers uttered the magic words: "I think I can help you boys out".

In 1970, he moved to Los Angeles to record an album with his early band, Shiloh. Shiloh's album was produced by fellow Texan Kenny Rogers. Shortly thereafter, Henley met Glenn Frey through Amos Records in Los Angeles. They both became members of Linda Ronstadt's backup band -- touring with her was the catalyst for forming the group in the first place. As a result, two months later they, along with Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner, became their own act, Eagles.

In June of 1994, Henley became engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Sharon Summerall, of Dallas. They both moved to Texas after an earthquake destroyed their home in California in 1994. Besides not wanting be in another earthquake, they wanted to have children. They also wanted to raise them near their grandparents and other family members.

They now have three children, Annabelle, Will, and Julia Sophia. Don Henley realizes the value of family and his marriage to Sharon Summerall has had a profound effect on his life. Sharon was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2005.

In 1993, Don co-founded the non-profit Caddo Lake Institute, a wetland science research institute to benefit environmental education programs both in the public school system and in colleges and universities in his native East Texas.

Cuthand, Texas in Red River county is home to the Cuthand Cemetery. A small tub is stashed away here that is large enough for plenty of trade items and trackables. Enjoy your visit.
