Geocache Description:

Cache is a micro film container with log book and a pencil close to the summit of Samphire Island.
Great Samphire Island is a small rock in the Bay around which is built the harbour and port of Fenit. The name comes from the rather rare yellow samphire (Inula crithmoides) plant that grows there.

Fenit (An Fhianait) is situated just 12km from Tralee in the beautiful setting of Tralee Bay. You will enjoy some of the most spectacular views on the Western Seafront and when visiting Fenit Harbour, stroll to the St. Brendan the Navigator Heritage Park. 12 – foot, bronze monumental statue to the saint is built on a 4 foot plinth on the summit of Samphire Island.

St. Brendan was born in 484 in Cinbeara (Alltraighe Cuille). The encounters of the saint were written in several different emerging European languages in the Middle Ages and are said to have inspired Dante in his Divine Comedy and Columbus in his voyage to the New World.
Fenit has honoured its hero passionately and have created a Heritage Trail based on his life in the local community.
