The Medieval Landgate.
Another ancient building is the Landgate. A plaque on the wall confirms that the medieval gateway was built in 1329 by Edward III to fortify the town. This was the only means of entry to the town when Rye was surrounded on three sides by the sea. The chamber above the gateway, between the two forty foot towers, once housed the mechanism that operated the drawbridge over the town ditch. There were four gate houses in the walls which surrounded the town. Only the Landgate survived. The High street runs from Landgate down to the Mint, with it's many black and white buildings. In the 17th century, shop keepers in the mint overcame the problem of a severe shortage of small coins by issuing their own tokens, which probably explains its unusual name.
