This is a small park in West Vancouver, situated on the western slope of Sentinel Hill, not far from where I grew up. I used to climb up to the lookout to ponder the meaning of life while gazing out over Burrard Inlet and the village below. I think at one time I might have even carved my initials into one of the benches.
I can recall a visit here on a dark, snowy December evening when I sat for a while listening to the foghorns at First Narrows and Point Atkinson taking turns playing their sombre lament amid the swirling frozen flakes. This was also one of my favourite spots to seek out on the hottest day of summer, hoping for even the slightest breath of wind to peel back that stale, stifling closeness.
Sentinel Hill's geology is similar to that of Vancouver's Little Mountain (aka Queen Elizabeth Park) which is why they are so distinct in their local landscape. Their harder rock makeup has helped them stand up to the effects of erosion over the millenia.
Be careful where you park. If you're lucky you might find an empty spot on Anderson Crescent, but you can also try down the hill on either Fulton or Esquimalt. There are numerous trails up to the lookout.
As it says above, this is a micro. That's why I gave it 2 stars for difficulty. You'll need to bring your own writing implement, and you'd best be prepared to write small. Remember, there's very little room for swag, so take nothing but a moment to enjoy the view and leave only regrets at having to move on.
ATTENTION: Be warned there is a cliff here, but there is a good, sturdy railing which you have no reason whatsoever to climb over or step around. There is absolutely no need to put yourself or any of your team in peril as the cache in NOT located on the cliff side of the railing.
