E' il monumento piu' antico e popolare di Livorno, simbolo della
citta' portuale e metafora della vittoria dei Medici, Granduchi di
Toscana, sui pirati, presenti in tutto il bacino del
Mediterraneo.
Il monumento si compone di due parti, una marmorea e l'altra in
bronzo. La prima, in marmo di Carrara, rappresenta Ferdinando I dei
Medici, in uniforme di Gran Maestro dell'Ordine dei Cavalieri di
Santo Stefano, marineria nata per combattere la pirateria, che
ostacolava il libero commercio e lo sviluppo del nascente porto
mediceo. L'Autore è lo scultore fiorentino Giovanni Bandini e
l'opera fu terminata nel 1595, vivente ancora Ferdinando I, ma solo
nel 1617, regnante Cosimo II, la statua fu posta sul suo
piedistallo.Successivamente furono aggiunti i Quattro Mori, opera
di pregevole fattura realizzata dallo scultore carrarese Pietro
Tacca, alllievo del Giambologna. I Mori furono posti agli angoli
dei basamento in due tempi tra il 1623 e il 1626.
Nel 1861 il monumento fu spostato di circa 20 metri e fu collocato
dove si trova oggi; nell'occasione fu completamente restaurato.
Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale fu di nuovo smontato per
difenderlo dai bombardamenti aerei, ed alla fine della guerra tornò
al suo posto.
The Four Moors is the oldest and most popular monument in Leghorn,
it symbolizes the winner of Medici against pirates in the
Mediterranean Sea.
The monument consist of two parts, one in marble and the other one
in bronze. The former, in Carrara marble, shows Ferdinando I dei
Medici in the uniform of the Order of the Knights of St. Stephan, a
navy establishment to fight the piracy which was an obstacle to
free trade and the development of the growning Medicean port.
Created by the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Bandini, it was
terminated in 1595, but only in 1617 the statue was placed on its
pedestal.
The Four Moors, works of considerable merit by the Carrara sculptor
Pietro Tacca, a pupil of Giambologna, were added between 1623 and
1626.
In 1861 the statue was moved about 20 mt to its present position.
On the occasion it was completely renovated. During the Second
World War it was once again dismantled to protect it from aerial
bombardments. At the end of the war it was returned to its
place.
