A very special event to
celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching. This is part of a
worldwide series of events that will be held on this weekend,
and your attendance will qualify for a special 10yr
anniversary event icon on your caches found
list.
The posted co-ords
are for the Wainuiomata Athletic and Harrier Club clubrooms in
Richard Prouse park, Wainuiomata, where the
event will be held. Please note that this is a change from
previously posted co-ords for the recreation area in Reservoir
road. The clubrooms will provide much better facilities as well
as an all-weather venue. An optional gold coin donation to
the club for use of their rooms would be much
appreciated.
The entrance to Richard Prouse park is from Hine Rd. There is
good parking at the park but with the possibility that there may be
soccer games on, you may need to park close by in Hine Rd. The
clubrooms are within easy walking distance of GC46, NZ's
oldest surviving geocache, also the 5th oldest active cache in the
world. GC46 will be a key feature of this event.
Theme is festive so please think "celebration" and dress to mark
the occassion. Minimum of at least a party hat for the group photo
please.
At this stage further details from Groundspeak are still pending
so please watchlist this event for ongoing updates and more
detailed information as it comes to hand.
As with all events this is an informal get together to meet
fellow geocachers, ask questions, tell tall tales, and maybe seek
out an extra hint or two for a tricky puzzle, or cache you can't
find. Newcomers are most welcome, and encouraged to
attend.
The event will run from midday to 5pm. Please bring a picnic
lunch and snacks for the afternoon. Alternatively there
are some nearby "corner" shops in Homedale, plus supermarkets and
the usual fast food places back in the main township if you're not
that well organised. Free tea and coffee will be
provided.
The following schedule is proposed. If anyone has any further
suggestions or requests please feel free to contact me.
10am: (Optional for those interested)
Guided walk to
Kitty Corner and Kittyhawk
Down caches.
Please assemble at the end of Sunny Grove (also off Hine
Rd) and be ready to go at 10am. You will need good walking shoes or
boots, a drink bottle, and a parka. Walking poles will be
handy if you have them. The walk up Skerrets creek itself is very
picturesque and open going, and apart from the need
to clamber across some fallen trees in a couple of
places no bushbashing is required. It is however off
track requiring numerous stream crossings so count
on getting your feet wet, and bring along a change of shoes
and socks for the event. The walk is suitable for children 10 years
or older.
Midday:
Meet and greet with a game of Geobingo to help get
acquainted.
1pm: Group walk
to visit NZ's oldest geocache,
GC46, and the newly
placed tribute cache,
Quintessential cache,
in the company of our two special
guests.
Option to return via Sledge Loop and Tana Umaga tracks to pick
up
Sledge Stump,
Tana's Track,
Alluring, and
Gum Trouble geocaches.
2pm-ish:
Lunch
3pm: GPS treasure
Hunt
4pm Cutting of the cake and group
photos
