Geocache Description:

This cache is another find on the “Mackinaw City Maritime Tales” Trail and part of the Mackinaw Area Historic Village Trail. Some of the crew from sailing vessels, which docked in Mackinaw City, were sometimes ill and had to be removed from ship. These people were taken to the House of Pestilence to hopefully recover from their ailment. Unfortunately many people did not make it out the front door, but through the side door into the cemetery! Small pox, tuberculosis, and diphtheria were some of the ailments that could land you in the pest house.

Many of the medicines that were used to treat an illness came from the plants and trees in the area. The sticky sap from the spruce tree was used in poultices on sores and inflammations. The sap mixed with fat proved to be a painkiller for cuts, scrapes, burns, and rashes.

The cache is a micro and winter friendly. BYOP – Bring your own pencil.

Congratulations to E71 - F-T-F
