Geocache Description:

A camoflaged tube. This cache is on private property with the permission of the owner. You may park briefly in the double driveway on the west side of the road if you wish.

Sixty years ago, the land to the west of this cache was wasteland. Washouts six feet deep scarring the face of the hill, the result of poor farming practices. On this 40-acre parcel there were only four large trees, with scrub growth along the fence lines.
The Conservation Department furnished black locust seedlings to plant in the washouts, plus various pines and other trees. The picture shows the land in the late 1950s, about four years after most of the trees were planted. The black locust spread rapidly, joined by volunteer poplar. Gradually maple appeared; they are increasing, replacing the locust and poplar, and in a few more decades will be the dominant species.
