Geocache Description:

A cache close to Belhus Icehouse.

The Icehouse was part of the Belhus Estate and was owned by the Barrett-Lennard family.

In the 1740's & 1750's the grounds were landscaped by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown; best known for the Serpentine in Hyde Park, London. Brown designed a similar snake like pond on the Belhus Estate which is called Long Pond. Long Pond can still be seen, although construction of the M25 motorway has robbed it of its original rural setting.

At the same time an Icehouse was built, a common feature of country houses for the storage of food and wine before refridgeration. The Belhus Icehouse, of which only the pit remains, consisted of an underground pit, and during winter ice from the Long pond was padded with straw and taken to the icehouse. Insulated by the thick walls and earth roof the ice remained frozen throughout the summer keeping everything cold.

The mansion which was once visited by Queen Elizebeth I was demolished after world war II due to suffering bomb damage, as well as vandalism from the military personnel who were staitioned there. A Golf course is now on the grounds and the remains of the mansion can be seen on the tenth hole.

Suggested parking for the cache can be found at a layby in Humber Avenue, which is a 7min walk from the cache.
