Geocache Description:

FORMERLY one of a series of caches designed to link with the River Thurne Series to complete a circuit mostly on permissive footpaths from Coldhabour in Ludham down the River Thurne to Thurne Mouth and thence up the River Bure to St Benet's Abbey and back to Coldharbour, eleven caches in all. Permissive path is now closed so many of the caches have been archived.

The cache is on the path outside the precinct and the perimeter of St Benet's Abbey. In addition to the the monastic buildings, the Abbey Church and the 18th century mill, the Abbey precinct also housed The Chequer's, an ancient wherryman's Inn which is thought to have been housed in the Abbot's Hall, the last remaining habitable building on the site. It burnt down 1880 and its remains pulled down in the early 20th century. While I was setting this cache I startled two muntjac deer, observed a barn owl, a marsh harrier, a kingfisher and a flock of about a dozen heron all together in a nearby dyke which was being dredged. This cache is fairly easy to access in winter but take care not to get ensnared by brambles. It may be overgrown in summer. Protective gloves and clothing may be necessary. A micro-cache, containing a log book only so please BYOP. A pen and a paperclip are basic equipment for all geocachers. Play the game. Sign the log or don't log it as found!
