Hughes Bridge III Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Cache Sleuth: I am archiving this cache due to construction underway on the adjacent land. While the hiding place is on U.S. Government (Corps of Engineers) property, it has been necessary to cross the nearby private land to get to it. Now that land clearing and construction has begun, this way of access is no longer available. Thanks to all those who have found the cache over the years!

*NOTE: I did not find the travel bug that was supposed to be in the cache so I have reported it as missing.

Geocache Description:

A small cache located in a wooded area beside Summersville lake and U.S. Route 19, just south of Summersville, WV. There are some great high views of Hughes Bridge and the lake near the cache hiding place. This is the third attempt for a successful, long-term cache hide in this area. Two earlier versions by another local cacher met with various moisture-related ends.

There is a gravel parking area about .30 mile north of Hughes Bridge beside U.S. Route 19 at coordinates N 38° 14.757, W 080° 51.350. This is the ONLY place you should park to begin your search. Do not park along the edge of the highway (there are "No Parking" signs from the turn-off to the parking area all the way back to the bridge) or attempt to get to the cache from Route 19 (there is a 5 foot high wildlife fence with barbed wire along the top that runs parallel to the highway). From the parking area, just hike south across the field to the tree line. Other than one 10 foot high bank just before you get to the trees, the field is generally level with a few marshy spots and some uneven, rocky ground. When you get to the tree line, the best place to enter the woods is at coordinates N38° 14.594, W080° 51.220 where you will see an old ATV trail. Just follow your GPSr from there to the hiding place.
You do not have to venture into any really dangerous areas to find the cache. However, there are some high cliffs and drop offs nearby so take care if you have small children with you.

The cache is a small 17 oz. Lock & Lock container. Initial contents are: a Charleston WV pin, 40% silver Kennedy half dollar, carabiner bottle holder, toy dinosaur, mini wood rocking horse, big dice, whistle lanyard, WVSU pin, butterfly clip, 2 hair clips, 6 foreign coins, and a log book with pen.

This is a popular area with rock climbers, cliff divers and swimmers, and it gets a lot of foot traffic in the summer months, so please rehide the cache exactly as found so it will still be there for the next searcher!
