Geocache Description:

The coordinates will take you to the front of the library. There is plenty of parking in between the library and the Town Hall.

The Olive Pettis Library is the site of a historical marker honoring Capt. John W. Gunnison. This is 1 of 188 historic markers in the State of New Hampshire that are deemed significant to New Hampshire history.

The Olive G. Pettis library began as a donation of Mrs. Pettis’s personal collection by her daughter Mrs. Sarah Halladay Deming of Providence, R.I. The gift had a stipulation that suitable housing for the collection be provided by the town. The offer was accepted and the first library in Goshen was a square house opposite the store in Mill Village, the home of Mrs. Emerette Powers who served as librarian for the sum of $10.00 a year.

The library later moved to the Chamberlain store and over time to various homes. The last location the home of H. Byron Russell was burned and only 30 of the libraries volumes were saved. In 1906 Henry H Hallady, Mrs. Deming’s son, suggested building a library. With support of the community and gifts of books from homes the new library opened on November 18, 1908 with over 500 volumes catalogued.

The Olive G. Pettis Library also is the site of The Soldiers Memorial a bronze tablet mounted on native field-stone bearing the names of all men from Goshen who served in the wars from the days of the Revolution to and including the First World War.
