Geocache Description:

This is not a park and grab cache. You will visit 4 stages to gather information. When placed, all the stages of this cache were near other caches, but they have all been archived. Final is black bison.

Completion of this cache will require a combination of on site field work and internet research. I suggest you do your internet research first so you understand what formats the information you are seeking may be in. You may be able to find some of the information in your local library, but I doubt it. Three of the stages are located at the remains of abandoned railroads and one at a public display of railroad equipment. None involve going near active railroad lines.

At this location you will need to acquire the DOT-AAR grade crossing inventory number. This inventory number consists of six numeric digits and one alphabetic digit and is affixed to a railroad related item still located at the site. Ignore the alphabetic digit (it is a B) and use the other six numbers for Bxxxxx.

HISTORY: This railroad was built by the Tremont & Gulf in the 1920's to connect their mainline to Monroe. In the 1950's it was sold to the Illinois Central who operated the line until the late 1980's when they began abandoning the line. Eventually the only portion remaining was the part just to the north of this location that serves the paper mill.

At this location you will find a short section of railroad track. You will need to locate the second rail from the west end on the south track. That piece of rail was made in the year xxAx and  weighs xE pounds per yard.

HISTORY: In 1857 the Vicksburg, Shreveport & Texas completed its railroad line between Shreveport and the Mississippi River opposite Vicksburg, crossing the Ouachita River near this location. Over the years short spurs were built connecting the railroad to numerous businesses located along the river. In more recent years as the transfer of merchandise between rail and river declined, the businesses closed and the tracks were removed. For some reason this short disconnected section of track survived.

At this site you will need to look at the two rails at the very east end of the bridge. Using the standard numerical format for months in which 01 = January and 12 = December, answer the following questions giving month and year. The south rail weighs Hx pounds per yard and was made xx, xxFx. The north rail was made xG, xxDx.

HISTORY: This railroad line was originally built by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway which later became part of the Missouri Pacific. The turnbridge was built across the Ouachita River to allow river traffic to pass. In the mid 1980's the Union Pacific acquired the Missouri Pacific and the line was abandoned and the rail removed northwest of the bridge. The bridge was left in the open position to allow river traffic to continue.

At this site you will need first need to look at the east rail under the caboose. This rail weighs Jx pounds per yard and was made in the year xxKx. The build date painted on the caboose is C-xxxx. Finally locate the weight of the caboose. It is Lxxxx.

HISTORY:  This caboose was actually built by the Gulf, Mobile and Northern in March 1913 as their #20. When the GM&N and the Mobile & Ohio merged to form the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio it was renumbered to 2825. As originally built it was a steel underframe wooden caboose. It later had metal sheathing applied to it. In its last years the GM&O merged with the Illinois Central to form the Illinois Central Gulf, but the car was never numbered into the ICG's numbering sequence before being retired.
