Geocache Description:

Cache is located in the Paoli Experimental Forest. Pedestrian traffic is welcome.

Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) (a.k.a. Yellow Popular, Tulip Popular) was adopted as the official State tree of Indiana by an act of the State legislature on March 3, 1931.

It is one of the tallest and most beautiful eastern hardwoods, with a long, straight trunk, a narrow crown that spreads with age, and large showy flowers resembling tulips or lilies.

The Tulip Tree can reach heights of 80 to 120 feet and 24 to 36 inches in diameter or larger. Its perfered habitat is moist well-drained soils, especially valleys and slopes; often in pure stands.

Its range extends from extreme southern Ontario east to Vermont and Rhode Island, south to north Florida, west to Louisiana, north to southern Michigan and to approximately 1000 feet in the northern and to 4500 feet in the southern Appalachians.

Tulip Tree was introduced into Europe from Virginia by the earliest colonists and is also grown on the Pacific Coast. Very tall trees with massive trunks existed in the primeval forests but were cut for the valuable soft wood. Pioneers hollowed out a single log to make a long, lightweight canoe. One of the chief commercial hardwoods, Tulip Tree is used for furniture, as well as for crates, toys, musical instruments, and pulpwood.

Cache is a medium peanut butter container.
