The black fly is the little bugger we hate to see while we're fishing or hiking here in the Adirondacks. It's also known as the buffalo or turkey gnat. They prefer clean running water with no pollution. It is a member of the family Simuliidae. The eggs are laid in running water with the larvae attaching themselves to rocks. Trout often prey on them during emergence. The males feed on nectar while the females feed on the blood of tther animals (including us). They feed in the daytime when the wind is low and are most prevelent in May and June. They are attacted by CO2, perspiration, perfumes and dark colors, especially blue. Wearing white and yellow is best. Bug spray and head netting is somewhat helpful.
