This cache is placed on the peak of Wildcat, one of the high horns
in the central Organs. The hike involves steep off-trail hiking and
some 3rd class climbing. The route described is called the Normal
Route.
Start from ~1.5 m up the Modoc Mine Rd. near the large boulder just
before the road begins to switchback (WC01). Head NE up the spur
ridge toward WC02. Then continue on the ridge as it turns to the
east. At WC03, turn to the left and traverse NE toward the Wildcat
Gully (WC04) which runs up between Wildcat and Dingleberry--the
higher peak to the south.
Then head up the gully toward the main Organ ridge. Eventually
another gully will join from the NW. Just continue in the main
gully until about 100' from the small saddle on the Organ ridge. At
this point you'll see some 3rd class rock you can climb up. (One of
the first moves may be 4th class but it's very short.) You'll be
climbing north for a little bit until you join the SE face of
Wildcat. Then some 3rd class rock hopping gets you to the
peak.
Overall, the terrain on this hike was better than expected.
Apparently a rock fall has occurred in the lower part of the gully
and so the hiking is isn't as brushy as you'd expect. (Just be
careful for loose boulders.) No technical gear is needed but you
may want to bring a rope if you want to rappel down. (I thought it
was easier just to downclimb the route.) This is a fun hike--just
be careful.
