Geocache Description:

Circa ---- Helsby

The co-ordinates at the top of the page are for suggested parking and not the cache site.

Dating a building by inscription is a long tradition, although not many of the actual architects get to have their names adorning the structure.

The trouble with inscriptions, useful though they are, is that you cannot be sure that they are right (many have been added by later owners) or that they date more than a particular feature or phase of development. The datestone has to be treated with the same critical eye as the rest of the building. This cache is designed to let you stroll around Helsby and hopefully find some dated buildings along the way. Helsby lies 1.5 miles east of junction14 on the M56. The village is along Chester Road (A56) and is overlooked by Helsby Hill, which is owned by the National Trust. The red Cheshire sandstone quarried from Helsby Hill has been used to build the Anglican cathedrals in both Liverpool and Chester. The final cache consists of a 35mm film canister, which is attached to its location by a magnet. The cache is easily accessible from the pavement. To find the co-ordinates of this final location you will need to note down some dates and substitute them into the formula below. Make sure however, that you are at the correct location, have the correct date and enter the information with care.

Please note all the dates can be seen from the pavement.
