Railways hold a fascination, especially old and abandoned ones.
KwaZulu-Natal is peppered with tunnels as the railway engineers battled the hilly terrain and many of these have now been abandoned for a more favourable route.
The tunnel under Hilton is a typical example.
The 875m concrete lined railway tunnel took two years to build and was completed in 1916. For 44 years the mainline from Durban and Pietermaritzburg to the interior ran through this tunnel.
In 1960 the twin Cedara tunnels, at 6023m long then the longest rail tunnels in the southern hemisphere, were completed and this tunnel was no longer needed.
Park at the bottom of Forest Lane, as indicated, then turn left along the old railway alignment which can be difficult, especially after rain. It is recommended that you have waterproof footwear to find this one. or may be just don't mind getting muddy !!
