Geocache Description:

A quick park and grab at the edge of the old McDoel marshaling yard that was run by the Monon railroad.

You can see this as either a quick park and grab or as the first in a series as you work your way through the old McDoel yards.
If I'd have known how much this area would change over the years I'd have taken more pictures. 25 years ago when I was driving buses there was an old gravel lot where the current bus facility is, across the street from this cache. During my breaks I'd wander over to the now boarded up yard office and talk railroad with the yard supervisor and his crew. I remember one time betting a dollar I could sink a spike in three hits with a seven pound maul. All that time I'd spent on the rail gang in Detroit sure paid off that day! Those were good guys. I swear, they made the worst coffee ever! Trains from all over would pass through here. You could feel the ground throb as the giant diesels rumbled by. On days when I timed things right I could latch onto the side of a freight car near my place on the north end of town and get a free ride all the way to work. The yard was humming with activity 24/7/365. On the tower in front of the office were enormous, powerful spot lights that made it seem like daylight on the tracks. Those are gone, too. But the tower remains.

You're looking for a little tin micro. Please put it back as found so it doesn't get water in it.

Oh yeah, the first to find should look under the rock below the cache. What's there?
