Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden at a small distance from the entrance to the ALMA road.

La caja esta escondida a una pequeña distancia desde la entrada del
proyecto ALMA.

Since the access to the dedicated road up to the Chajnantor plateau is restricted the cache is placed here instead.

Chajnantor plateau is among the driest places on earth, and it is reasonable accessible. The weak signals from distant galaxies to be observed would be attenuated by the water vapor in the atmosphere if the telescopes was placed at other places.
There are two similar projects at Chajnantor, the main is Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and a prototype ALMA telescope is used for Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX).

The ALMA Base camp can be seen from the valley (or the cache), while Chajnantor is not visible from the cache. The telescopes are placed behind the mountains at an altitude of about 5000m.

El camino de ALMA esta restringido, por lo tanto debio ser dejado en ese
lugar y no cerca del Telescopio ALMA.

La llanura del Chajnantor es uno de los lugares mas secos del planeta y
tiene accesos razonables. Cuando la debil luz de galaxias distantes llega a
la tierra, una pequeña cantidad de agua en la atmosfera puede atenuar las
señales, por eso el telescope debe estar ahi.
Hay varios proyectos en el Chajnantor, el principal es el Atacama Large
Millimeter/submillimeter Array, ALMA. Un prototipo de este tipo de antenas
es usado en el proyecto Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment, APEX.

Se puede ver la base del ALMA desde el valle (o la caja), pero no es
posible ver el Chajanantor desde ahi, ya que este lugar esta detras de las
montañas a una altura de 5000m sobre el nivel del mar.
