Jacob's Lodge Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mooseky: The old Kenwood Siltstone wall the original cache was in is now mostly gone. Since there is not any appropriate places that could be found next to the lodge I will archive this cache and create a new one at the edge of the woods.

Geocache Description:

Jacobs Lodge is an old picnic shelter that sits atop Iroquois Park hill.  It is constructed of Kenwood Siltstone quarried from neighboring Kenwood Hill.  The structure most likely was constructed as a WPA project that dates back to the late 1930's.  The Work Progress Administration was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to put displaced people back to work during and following the great depression.

The WPA was responsible for building many public buildings, bridges, and roads in Jefferson County by 1940.  It completed the Iroquois Amphitheater in 1938.  The original amphitheater, before remodeling, was constructed of Kenwood Siltstone and bricks in the same style as Jacobs Lodge.

Jacobs Lodge has been the site of many park events and family reunions over the years.  One of the most popular events was Iroquois Park Winterfest.  Jacobs Lodge served as Santa's house.  I remember taking my son to visit Santa and Mr's Claus and having a cup of hot chocolate at the lodge while enjoying the warmth of the fireplace.  Santa's reindeer were in a pen just outside the lodge. The lodge and a large surrounding area were decorated with Christmas lights.

Jacobs Lodge has certainly seen better days. It is still in good shape but in need of some restoration.  Hopefully someday soon it can be restored back to it's glory days.

The cache is a camouflaged 35mm hidden near Jacobs Lodge.  Remember to bring a writing instrument to sign the log..
