Geocache Description:

A.K.A. Sirdi's Walk Redux

A flat walk through Pembrey Forest along well established tracks and trails. Although flat, there's no short route to this cache - expect a round trip of something like 3-4 miles, depending on your starting point! As well as footpaths, one possible route almost directly to the cache location follows Sustrans cycle route 4.

Pembrey Forest, maintained by the Forestry Commission is quite unusual in the fact that it is a sand dune forest. As such it has unusual flora and fauna and is a nature reserve covering over 1000 hectares in area.

Many rare breeds can be seen here if you're observant including butterflies, songbirds and even birds of prey such as sparrowhawk and goshawk.

There are numerous routes to the cache and wherever you start from you may chose to make this a circular route and you won't need to stray too far from the beaten track throughout your walk.. The main tracks as shown on an Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Explorer map are on the whole very accurate - but there are numerous signed and unsigned paths throughout the forest too.

There's free parking outside Pembrey Country Park at N 51° 40.900 W 004° 17.580 with easy direct access via a Forestry Commissioned signed route - this is also the route taken by Sustrans Cycle Route 4 almost all the way to the cache.

You could also seek this cache as part of a visit to the park itself, perhaps taking a walk along the picturesque expanse of Cefn Sidan Sands as part of your route to the cache. There are many parking locations within the park, but there is an entry fee for cars.

The cache itself is a large container and shouldn't be too difficult to find, just off a well trodden sandy track.

While it may seem a long walk, there are a number of picnic tables relatively close to the cache location for you to perhaps take some refreshments before the return journey.

The name?

Pembrey (pem-brey): the name attributed to the local area, encompassing the local village, forest, burrows, the nearby Pembrey Country Park, the adjacent Airport/race track and also the nearby RAF training area.

Peripatetic (per-i-pa-tet-ic): Walking about or from place to place; travelling on foot. So named because none of the paths seem to want to take you in the direct direction of the cache!

Perambulation (per-am'bu-lat`ion): To traverse in order to examine or inspect

This cache is hidden as a direct replacement for Sirdi's Walk cache (GC22FD), one of Wales' earliest caches, which was archived at the end of 2009.

A spoiler image has been provided for those who find finding this cache a challenge - this should give a fair idea where to start looking. A second image used to be provided but this is no longer accurate so I've removed it.
