When you get out of your parked car, you will be standing on the former location of the Milwaukee County House of Correction and the United States Army Disciplinary Barracks. In fact, you will be standing in the central exercise area of the prison.

Imagine three-story prison buildings completely surrounding you with guards patrolling on a wide walkway above you. Fortunately, the buildings were torn down in 1974, and you are free to find this cache.

You are looking for an old foundation marking the place where William Momsen, the Chief Inspector of the House of Correction, lived for many years. He served as Chief Inspector for so long that the House of Correction was nicknamed “Hotel Momsen” after him. After years of research, I’m fairly sure that William Momsen wasn’t the first occupant of this house. Sometime in the late 1800s, Ferdinand and Albertina Zautcke, their 11 children, and their three servants probably lived in this same house. While today we might tear down a perfectly good house to build another in the same spot, I doubt our turn-of-the-century ancestors would have been so wasteful.
