A nano at the Niantic Turtle. Little is known of the turtle but
what follows here is the most common myth of the turtle’s
origins from generations ago. The turtle lived in the sea –
specifically Long Island Sound - during a time when Greek Gods
ruled the skies of the Ancient World. The turtle was very old and
ready to escape to the land that would become known as Niantic, as
it has grown tired of the sea. This was against the order of the
ancient land. It did not take long for the Greek God of the sea,
Poseidon, to discover the turtle’s escape, as the balance of
the sea had shifted. The turtle was roaming around this new land of
Niantic – exploring the Main Street that centuries later
would be home to Niantic Cinema, The Black Sheep Pub and Gumdrops
and Lollipops. Poseidon gave notice to Hephastus, the God of metal,
to find the turtle. It was of urgent cause --for the balance
between land and sea needed to be quickly restored!
Hephastus tracked the turtle down and gave it two options, to
return to the sea it had abandoned, or to be forever cast in solid
metal on land as a consequence for defying the Gods. The sea
represented its past and the turtle would not go back. The turtle
bravely told Hephastus that it would accept being cast in metal to
stay on the precious land for eternity instead of being exiled back
into the sea.
…The road splits when it reaches the turtle as the sheer
weight of the metal statue is too much for any mere mortal to move.
Watch for muggles -- for the turtle was left exposed as a
cautionary tale to others.
