Geocache Description:

Can you believe it? Geocaching is ten years old! Happy Birthday Geocaching!

To celebrate, we are meeting up at Inshes Gate - a Brewer’s Fayre bar and restaurant – in Inverness from 6.00pm onwards on the evening of Sunday 2nd May. This venue was chosen as it is both family and disabled friendly, serves food if you wish to eat, has a hotel attached to it if you wish to stay over (it’s the May Bank Holiday the next day!), and is close to the A9 for easy access. The time has been chosen to maximize the caching day for those coming from further afield and who may wish to spend some time finding caches in and around Inverness.

Geocachers worldwide are holding events over this particular weekend to get together and celebrate the first 10 years of geocaching.

The 10 Year events mark the announcement on 1st May 2000 by President Clinton that Selective Availability (the scrambling of the satellite navigation system) was to be turned off, and the actual switching off which took place the following day. This meant that everyone was now be able to enjoy greater accuracy of the Global Positioning System, and on the 3rd May Dave Ulmer took advantage of that to hide what was to be the world’s first geocache, just outside Portland, Oregon. He posted the co-ordinates on the internet and waited for someone to find it….

In order to gain a special 10 years icon for this event, we need to have at least 10 people attend and have their photo taken together to meet the Groundspeak requirements for this event. Another requirement is for there to be a festive theme to the event. As St Andrews Day, Hogmanay and Burn’s Night are distant memories now, we thought that it would be good to drag your Scottish items out of their hiding places and take them to this event. Please come either wearing something Scottish (doesn’t need to be a kilt – something tartan or a Tam O’Shanter would be fine!) or take a Scottish flag with you. A thistle or a posy of heather would do too!

It would be great if you could come and join us for a while this evening, and raise a glass to Dave Ulmer, who set that very first cache a decade ago. Imagine – one cache in all the world this time 10 years ago – now there are over one million!

The co-ordinates above are for the venue, and the address, if you need it, is:

Inshes Gate
Beechwood Park
Inverness
IV2 3BW

We have been allocated the conservatory for our meet – so you will find us in there!

If you intend to come along, please post a “Will Attend” log so that I can give the venue and idea of numbers

Hope you can all come! Look forward to seeing you there if you can make it!
