Party in your Pajamas!

10 Years! of Geocaching, Waterville, Maine

Saturday, May 1, 2010

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

UPDATE: With the arrival of another event in Portland at 10:30 pm, and the desire of some extreme cachers, I would like to change the timing on my event to make it easier for people to attempt to attend all 5 10 Year events. We will be at the hotel by 5 pm on May 1 so feel free to mozy on over. We MAY wrap up earlier than 10 pm depending on who's there and what the plans are. Hope this helps everyone to plan a little easier. Ohh....and if you actually show in your PJ's at 5 pm....that deserves a prize right there.

A little history...

On May 1, 2000, President Bill Clinton's executive order to discontinue Selective Availability allowing users to receive a non-degraded GPS signal globally was executed.

On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, the switch controlling "Selective Availability" was thrown. Twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade.

On May 3, 2000, Dave Ulmer placed the very first geocache, The Original Stash, a black bucket, in the woods near Beaver Creek, Oregon. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, a can of beans and a slingshot. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav, and Geocaching was born.
