How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

On 2nd May 2000, the US Government turned off GPS selective availability. This meant that recreational GPS receivers became accurate to about 10 metres. On 3rd May 2000, Dave Ulmer hid the first "stash" just outside Portland in Oregon and published the location on an internet forum. Within three days it had been found several times, and thus Geocaching was invented!

This event is one of hundreds of special events taking place all around the world to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Geocaching.

Where: The Cat & Fiddle Inn, Clyst St Mary, Nr. Exeter, Devon. EX5 1DP. (01392) 873317. From M5 J30, follow signs A3052 to Sidmouth for a few miles.

When: Saturday 1st May 2010, from 11:30am until 3:00pm

Why: To meet up with fellow cachers to celebrate 10 years of Geocaching, to talk about caching, exchange ideas, exchange travel bugs and coins and possibly even get some hints on local devious puzzles!

The special bit! It is intended that this event will qualify for a special one-off "10 years!" event cache type icon. To do this, it needs to meet the following guidelines:

* Events must be held on May 1 or May 2, 2010.
* At least 10 people must attend the event.
* A video or picture must be taken at the event. At least 10 attendees must be in the video/photo along with a legible sign showing the event coordinates and location name.
* The people in the video or photo should be festive. Be inventive! But please keep it family friendly. With this in mind, please bring a party hat and/or some balloons or hooters with you for the photo!

What else?: The Landlord has kindly reserved the skittle alley area for us. The best entrance door to use is the back door to the pub, furthest from the road. This brings you right in to the area where we will all be.

The Cat & Fiddle is a 16th Century Freehold Inn with a large car park and childrens play area. The pub opens at 11:30am on Saturdays and has a selection of real ales, wines and an extensive food menu. Well behaved dogs are allowed in the skittle alley area where we will all be.

Please indicate in your "Will Attend" log if you intend to eat and how many of you there are. Food doesn't need to be ordered in advance, but the kitchen will appreciate the warning if there are a lot of us eating.

See you there!
