This Earthcache will lead you to the Ravenvennen, a part of the
Maasduines. The Maasduines are a belt of sand dunes at the eastern
bank of the Maas, between Gennep and Venlo.
The Ravenvennen cover an area of 380 ha, consisting of many small
bogs, sanddunes, heathland and coniferous and deciduous
forests.
Here you can find a big number of reptiles, amphibians, dragonflies
and many different bird species.
In the Ravenvennen, you can find the Wittenberg, one of the biggest
parabola dunes of the Maasduines.
Parabolic dunes are U-shaped mounds of sand with convex noses
trailed by elongated arms.
Sometimes these dunes are called U-shaped, blowout, or hairpin
dunes, and they are well known in coastal deserts. Unlike crescent
shaped dunes, their crests point upwind. The elongated arms of
parabolic dunes follow rather than lead because they have been
fixed by vegetation, while the bulk of the sand in the dune
migrates forward.

To log this earthcache:
1. Go to the Wittenberg and make a picture of yourself with GPS
sitting on the tree, wich you can see on the picture above (due to
the new guidelines this is optional) at N 51° 26.403 E 006° 11.577
and make sure the pond is visible in the background
2. Answer the following 2 questions at the notice-board at N 51°
26.055 E 006° 11.504:
a. Explain how the Wittenberg and the other dunes of Ravenvennen
arose.
b. Under the dunes of Ravenvennen, there is a geological
characteristic whereby moorlands develop there. Tell us
which.

Deze cache brengt u naar de Ravenvennen, een deel van de
Maasduinen. De Maasduinen zijn een rij zandduinen aan de oostelijke
oever van de Maas tussen Gennep en Venlo.
De Ravenvennen beslaan een gebied van 38 ha en bestaan uit vele
kleine moerasjes, zandduinen, heidelanden winterharde en winterkale
bossen. Hier vind je een groot aantal reptielen, amfibieën,
libellen en veel verschillende soorten vogels.
In de Ravenvennen bevindt zich de Wittenberg, een van de grootste
paraboolduinen van de Maasduinen. Paraboolduinen zijn U-vormige
bergen zand met bolle neuzen, gevolgd door uitgestrekte armen. Soms
worden deze duinen leeggeblazen U-duinen of haarspeld duinen
genoemd en ze zijn bekend in kustwoestijnen.
Anders dan bij halvemaanvormige duinen, wijzen hun kammen tegen de
wind in. De uitgestrekte armen van paraboolduinen liggen vast door
de begroeiing , terwijl het meeste zand in de duinen vooruit
“wandelt”.
1.Begeef je naar de Wittenberg en maak een foto van jezelf met je
GPS zittend op de boom, die je op de bovenste foto kunt zien bij N
51° 26.403 E 006° 11.577 en zorg er zeker voor dat het meer op de
foto te zien is.
2. Beantwoord de twee vragen bij de infobord bij N 51° 26.055 E
006° 11.504
a. Verklaar hoe de Wittenberg en de andere duinen van de
Ravenvennen ontstaan zijn.
b. Onder de duinen van de Ravenvennen begeeft zich een geologische
bijzonderheid, vanwege de daar ontstane heidegrond. Welke?
