Geocache Description:

This bridge is east of Masterton near Wainuioru.

Ngaumu Road Bridge over Upokongaruru Stream
Also known as Deep Gorge Bridge

Completed March 1916 at a cost of £2318. The bridge was funded by the Department of Lands and Survey in association with the formation of Ngaumu Road by the then Public Works Department, to access to the Poroporo Settlement.

The bridge spans 144 feet (44 metres) and is the gorge is 131 feet (40 metres) deep. The cliff face at the south end of the bridge slipped during a 1936 earthquake. The bridge was moved bodily seven feet onto new concrete foundations in September 1938.

The bridge was replaced by a new bridge in 1984. Until recently the bridge was used for bungy jumping and bridge swinging.

The cache is a 400ml Sistema container, inside are a couple of small items, a pencil and a log-book.
