Geocache Description:

Surfcoast Secrets is a series of caches designed to share some of the places that make the Surfcoast special. These include iconic and lesser known views, local history and landmarks. #4, which was Juc_cacher's second hide is a traditional cache, located in a scenic spot, with a twist. Please approach only from the beach, don't wander around the dunes more than you need to.

The surf beach at Point Impossible is popular with surfers. It's at the end of a sometimes corrugated dirt road.

Also, be aware, the beach to the right of the carpark is a clothing optional one, so in summer, you may get more than you bargained for !

A word of warning. Google Maps shows the Torquay Esplanade continuing all the way to Point Impossible. THIS IS NOT THE CASE !!! You cannot drive via this route !! You can walk, you can jog, you can ride a bike, but you cannot drive this way. Vehicular approach is strictly via the road off Blackgate Rd.

Parking at the main carpark, the view to the left, across the mouth of Thompson's Creek towards Barwon Heads, is as open and windswept a piece of coast as you'll ever find. You could be miles from anywhere, there's no obvious signs of habitation. On its day, it's such a haunting, bleak, beautiful place. It's also pretty scenic on a sunny day.

If the tide is low, there's a carpark near the little bridge that is slightly closer, but at high tide, you will need to go to the main one.

When you approach GZ, you'll encounter a small concrete bunker, close into the side of the dune, with views back towards Port Phillip Heads. At this stage, I haven't been able to find out much information about it, other than it apparently dates from WW1. To me it looks more like WW2, but I am endeavouring to find out and will update this page.

Obviously, it was the job of some poor guys to sit there in that bunker, staring out to sea, waiting for a ship, plane or submarine that never came. I imagine the beauty of the area soon wore thin !!

There are many traces of wartime bunkers and gun emplacements between Anglesea and the Heads, but this one is suprisingly intact. You can enter the structure, but I'd advise wearing footwear, there is some broken glass around.

I have lived around this area for almost 20 years and I never knew this was here ! Juc_jr #2 and I were intending to make the hide closer to the main carpark so you could enjoy the view of the deserted coast and the inlet. Juc_jr#2 went off exploring and when he discovered this, he said "this is much too good not to put a cache here !" So we did.

The cache is a 0.2l Sistema located nearby. The area can be popular at times, with the aforementioned surfers and naturists, so some discretion may be required, but most of the time, this should be a trouble-free find. Please note that this area is part of the breeding ground for the endangered Hooded Plover, so please keep to the tracks and don't wander around the dunes . Unfortunately, not everyone seems to respect the area and broken glass is quite common and not just inside the bunker, so footwear is recommended. Apart from surfers and nudists, the scrub in the dunes can be a bit of a snakey area in summer, so again, please keep to the tracks and you'll be fine.
