Simonsberg Trail #1:
Baboon's Armchair
A short hike up to the first of at least 15 caches which may be found on the Simonsberg-Swartkop range of mountains running from North Peak above Simon’s Town and ending at Smitswinkel close to the entry gate for Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. The cache is hidden in a spectacular rock formation and superb viewpoint on the slopes of Simonsberg.
Park in Jan Smuts Drive @ S 34 11.966 E 18 26.916 near the bottom of the jeep track (if you have an off-road vehicle you can drive up the track and park nearer the start of the foot trail).
Walk up the track to the signpost @ S 34 12.043 E 18 26.753 which marks the start of the Blockhouse Gap Trail otherwise known as the Mule Track.
Head along this trail which after initial zig-zags starts to head south up towards the gap.
At S 34 12.151 E 18 26.677 leave the track heading diagonally (west) up towards the right.
From here on there is no clear path but you can head across the hillside towards the prominent rock feature and cache location without difficulty picking your way carefully through the low bush and rocks on the ground.
The cache, a small cylindrical screw-capped black-taped plastic tub, is hidden at the foot of the large crack in the back-rest of the armchair on the False Bay side.
From here you can either retrace your steps or (highly recommended!) move on to the next cache at Simonsberg North Peak (GC25X1A) . . . but not before trying the squeeze . . . through the crack and out the back of the armchair.
