Lizard Tail Swamp Preserve is an 857-acre tract of forest habitat waiting to be explored. This site, only a short distance from Cape May Court House’s busy commercial and residential areas, has easy access into seemingly wild woodland. When you walk into the forest and the trees surround you, the sound of traffic gives way to the sounds of forest life. A narrow trail winds through various habitats from lowland swamps and ponds to upland dry woods. A dirt road leads you into another interior portion of the site. Along each trail you can listen to the many sounds of the forest, look for animals and tracks, and identify the trees and plants.
After enjoying a nice hike in LTS, we saw a salamander on the trail and then a lizard on a tree. They inspired us to hide this cache. We think the lizard was an Eastern Fence (Pine) Lizard Sceloporus Undulatus, but it had an orangy-red throat patch rather than bluish. Did some internet research but couldn't find a similar lizard with an orange throat. Perhaps someone who logs our cache will share knowledge of local lizard species.
Cache is a quick grab & go at the entrance to the preserve. On nice days, the parking area may be busy so use stealth. There are several other caches in the preserve that you may want to check out, as well. Please be sure to replace the cache as found, thanks!
Note: If you do not sign the log that is in the cache you may not claim it as a find. If I check for your sig and it is not there your find WILL be deleted.
