The Waterman Area is a small community that lies in a small valley just east of Port Orchard and west of Manchester State Park. It is bordered to the South by Elim Lutheran Church and the Waterman Club and to the North by Lighthouse Point. The area was settled by mostly Scandinavian Immigrants at the turn of the century. This community started with various families settling on 10 - 15 acre farms one store, and a two-room school house built in 1896. Later additions to the area included a Church and the Waterman dock.

We have lived in this area for the last 32 years so we hope with this little series you can enjoy this area that we now call home. The other area that you will drive by is the
Waterman Dock. It has been in existance, some form or another since the turn of the century and owned by the Port District. Across the street is the building that was the Local store, post office, and a single hand pump gas station. There was a storehouse on the dock used for storing 100# sacks of flour, sugar and potatoes. A Mosquito fleet frieghter would make a weekly stop at the dock to bring the repentishment supply for this area. Twice each workday the passenger ferry "Chickaree" would make a stop on it's way to and from Bainbridge Island to pick up workers forthe trip to and from PSNS. Most families would stop at this store on Saturdays on the way home from Port Orchard to pick up their supplies. neighborhood kids would make random trips here to get their penny candy. The dock today is still being used by the locals as a fishing stage and by others who stop by to see a beautiful Northwest sunset.
