A nice way to start this one is at the old Camp Hamilton trail head a mile or so east of the Los Alamos Airport on NM502 at N35 52.480, W106 14.860. Another start point is the dirt road starting at N35 52.169, W106 13.012. You sort of have to really want to find this cache, as most of the hike is cross country, but the scenery is well worth it.
This cache is the second in a series of seven we call the Pajarito Plateau Mesa Top Caches.
Gertchie Birdie (Blue & Gold Macaw) left several of his wing feathers in the cache. Other stuff:
- Beer stein
- Stuffed toy
- Moroccan coin purse
- Pencil
- Coconut masks
- Loofa body sponge
- A book
- A sand dollar
- Three cat napkin holders
On 11/3, we saw approximately 2,500 Sandhill Cranes flying overhead on their way south throughout the day.

Note:
On 11/13/01 I found a shorter route to this cache. Start at N35 53.700 W106 15.177. Head southeast: this will take you across the mesa top towards the cache. Note: There are a couple of places where you need to use hand and footholds carved into the pumice to descend places where the mesa drops levels. It's not difficult, but if the thought of this makes you nervous, you should probably use one of the other starting points.
